What fencing actually costs here

The short version

Guide ranges across the work we do: closeboard fencing £90 - £130 per metre, fence repair £60 - £150 per repair, fence panel replacement £85 - £150 per panel, composite fencing £95 - £180 per metre, garden gates and driveway gates £200 - £700 per gate, decking £70 - £130 per m². All figures exclude VAT and every job is quoted fixed in writing once the run has been measured. What moves a fencing price most is not the boards but the ground and the posts underneath them.

The full breakdown, what moves a quote up or down, and where cheap fencing goes wrong, is on the cost guide, alongside 36 straight answers in our FAQs.

Post hole tools, spirit level and feather edge boards laid out beside a part-built fence
The part of a fence that decides how long it lasts is the part you never see again.
Where fences actually fail

It is almost never the boards.

A fence that leans after two winters was decided on the day it went in, below the soil. Post depth, whether the concrete sheds water away from the timber, whether a gravel board keeps the boards clear of wet ground, and whether the post suits that ground at all. Cheltenham sits between heavy Severn Vale clay and the limestone brash of the escarpment, and they fail in different ways.

  • Post holes dug to depth for the height of fence they carry, not to the depth the day allows
  • Concrete haunched and shed away from the post so water runs off rather than sitting against timber
  • Gravel boards as standard on new runs, so the boards never sit in wet soil
  • Honest advice on concrete versus timber posts for your ground, before you commit

Form to finished fence

Step 1

Tell us the job

Two steps, about a minute: what you are planning and the postcode, then your contact details. No phone tag, no callback roulette.

Step 2

Send a photo

Reply to our email with a photograph and a rough length. For most jobs that is enough to price properly without anyone visiting.

Step 3

Fixed written quote

A written specification and a fixed price against it. Anything found once the old fence is out is priced separately, in writing, before we carry on.

Step 4

The work, and the clear-up

Posts in, boards up, old fence and spoil taken away. The garden is left usable, not covered in offcuts.
