Why we publish prices

Look at what people actually search for around fencing and it is nearly all money: what a fence costs per metre, what a panel costs to replace, what a thirty metre run comes to. Then look at fencing websites, and most of them make you ask. We think that is backwards. A range you can plan against is more useful than a quote you have to chase, and anyone who arrives already knowing our ranges has skipped the part of the conversation where both sides are guessing. The ranges live on the cost guide. The fixed number comes in writing before any work starts.

Why there is no phone number

Deliberate, and worth explaining. A fence prices from two things: how long the run is, and what state the ground and the existing posts are in. Both of those travel far better as a photograph and a measurement than as a description over a call. Send the form with a photo and you get a considered reply within one working day, with every detail on record. It also means nobody is ringing you back at six in the evening to chase a decision.

What actually makes a fence last

The visible part of a fence is the part that matters least. Boards and panels can be replaced in an afternoon by anyone. What you are really paying for is what happens at ground level: how deep the post holes go, whether the concrete is properly haunched and shed away from the timber, whether a gravel board keeps the bottom of the boards clear of wet soil, and whether the posts are the right thing for that ground in the first place. Cheltenham sits between two very different grounds, the clay of the Severn Vale and the limestone brash of the escarpment, and they fail in different ways. A fence that leans after two winters was almost always decided on day one, below the soil.

What we will not do

• Quote a full run from a description alone. Send a photograph and a rough length and we can usually price it properly; without either, any number we gave you would move.
• Put a new panel into a rotten post and call it a repair. If the post has gone we say so, even when it turns a cheap job into a real one.
• Concrete a bare timber post straight into wet clay and hope. Where the ground stays damp, the honest answer is a concrete post or a spur, and we will tell you which.
• Tell you planning permission is needed when it is not. Most domestic fencing under two metres does not need it, and pretending otherwise to sound authoritative helps nobody.
• Decide your boundary for you. Where the line runs and who owns which fence is a question for your title plan, not for a fencing contractor with an opinion.

How we quote

You send the job and a postcode. We reply within one working day with an honest bracket, and ask for a photograph and a rough length if you have not sent them. For most jobs that is enough to price without visiting at all. Where a visit helps, we measure the run and check what the existing posts are doing, then put a written specification and a fixed price against it. If something turns up once the old fence is out, a post snapped below ground, a buried obstruction, a neighbour's structure fixed to the line, it gets priced separately in writing before we carry on. Never added to the invoice afterwards.

Insurance details are confirmed in writing with every quote, so you can check them rather than take our word for it. Ask for anything else you want to see before work starts and you will get it in the same email.
