Is composite fencing worth it?
It is worth it if you want to stop maintaining a fence and you plan to stay. Composite costs more upfront, at £95 to £180 per metre excluding VAT against £90 to £130 for closeboard, and the payback is no staining, no warping and no rot. It does not suit every garden, and the long-life claims are warranty periods rather than proven service lives.
Composite fencing is a wood-plastic composite: recycled polyethylene and reclaimed wood fibre, heated and extruded into boards. Capped composite is co-extruded with an outer layer carrying UV inhibitors and colourants, which is what resists fading. It does not absorb water the way timber does, so it does not rot, and it never needs staining. That is the whole proposition, and for the right household it is a good one.
Be careful how the lifespan is sold. Manufacturer warranties of 10 to 25 years are common and reputable, but a warranty is a commercial promise with conditions, not a measured service life. For comparison, a well-specified pressure-treated timber fence from a manufacturer like Jacksons carries a 25-year guarantee of its own. Composite is genuinely low-maintenance; it is not in a different league from good timber on paper, and anyone telling you it lasts forever is selling.
The honest reasons to say no. Composite reads as modern, and against Cotswold stone, a Regency rear elevation or a village conservation-area setting it can look wrong in a way that no amount of woodgrain embossing fixes. It is also a poor fit if you expect to move within a few years, because you pay the premium now and the new owner collects the maintenance saving.
One genuine cost-saver worth knowing. Composite panels can often be slotted straight into existing concrete posts and gravel boards, which is common across the estates at Bishop's Cleeve, Quedgeley and Kingsway. If your posts are sound concrete and only the timber has gone, you can upgrade the visible fence without touching the structure, and the job prices very differently from a full replacement.
